Girl drowned as country craft capsizes

KANNUR: A six-year-old girl was washed away when a small country craft capsized in the Pulluppi river at Pulluppikadavu under the Valapattanam Police Station limits here on Sunday. The girl, Kavya, was on board the craft with her uncle, Suresh, and his friend, Mirash. Both Suresh and Mirash swam to safety. The accident occurred when Kavya was returning home to Kannadiparamba after spending the vacation at her uncle's house at Pulluppikadavu. The craft capsized at 4.45 p.m. The police said search and rescue operations were on. — Staff Reporter

Councillor's house attacked

THRISSUR: A group of unidentified persons attacked the house of the leader of the Muslim Youth League (MYL) and councillor of the Chavakkad municipality, Sagir Sabri, early Sunday. The assailants smashed the windowpanes of Mr. Sabri's car and fled on seeing him. According to the preliminary information received by the police, the attack was in retaliation to the clash at a youth club near Manathala. Mr. Sabri had reportedly helped those injured in the clash. Senior police officials visited the spot and are probing the incident. — Staff Reporter

Kumarakom boat club lifts MetLife trophy

KOTTAYAM: Oarsmen of the Kumarakom Town Boat Club on `Payippadan' bagged the Rs.1 lakh MetLife ever-rolling trophy at the 107 Kottayam Boat Race in Thazhathangadi on Sunday. The Thiruvarpu Boat Club on `Sree Ganesh' came second. This is the second major victory for Payippadan and Kumarakom Town Boat Club who were the hat-trick winners at the recent Nehru Trophy boat race. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy inaugurated the boat race.

Two killed in accident

Palakkad: A man and a three-year-old girl were killed and 15 injured when the van in which they were travelling and a mini bus collided at Kaduthuruthi here on Sunday evening. The police said the dead were Gurumurthy, 50, and Thejaswini, both from Salem. The van was carrying pilgrims back to Salem from the Guruvayoor temple. The mini bus was going to Malampuzha. The injured were admitted to a local hospital, the police said.

K. Venu to go on indefinite fast

KANNUR: Political activist K. Venu has said that he will go ahead with his scheduled indefinite hunger strike beginning on October 2 till the Government takes steps to address the issue of over 400 life-term prisoners, including women and the sick, who continue to be under `unfair imprisonment' in the State. Inaugurating a campaign here on Sunday in support of the indefinite fast in front of the Secretariat, under the aegis of the Vadhashiksha Virudha Samithi, from October 2, Mr. Venu said that many of the life term prisoners were penitent about the crimes they had committed and that was the reason why they were separated from habitual prisoners in jails.

Painting exhibition begins

Thrissur: An exhibition of paintings by 10 artists, organised by Sankamitra, began at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here on Sunday.

Nearly 70 paintings are on display. On show are works of Ramachandran Nediyanga, V. Santharam, Aby N. Joseph, Vasavan Payyattom, Rajamma Thampuran, Sidhu Aliyoor, Appukkuttan Kottappadi, Vinod Mayoora, N. Latha Devi and Vidya Ranjith. The exhibition will conclude on September 14. — Staff Reporter

Project to plant saplings launched

Thrissur: A project to plant 3,000 saplings in the district, as part of the centenary celebrations of the World Scout Movement, was launched here on Sunday.

There are 3,000 scouts and guides in the district. Each will plant a sapling on the premises of his or her school. Nearly 100 veteran scouts and guides were felicitated at a function held at the Model Girls High School on Sunday evening. — Staff Reporter
