MYSORE: As a prelude to the first State-level Dasara Karate championship to be held in Mysore on September 23, a "karate walk" was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar here on Sunday. A colourful demonstration was held by karate students at Chamaraja Circle near Mysore Palace North Gate. Mr. Selvakumar inaugurated the karate walk by breaking a Mangalore tile in the true Karate style. Over 800 students from karate schools in the city took part in the walk. A procession was taken out around the thoroughfares of the city. Mr. Selvakumar said that the State-level karate championship had been organised to promote the sport in the city. Over 2,000 sportspersons were likely to take part in the championship, he added. He released a "Karate Homestay" poster on the occasion. The home stay concept is being promoted during the championship. This will enable a player from outside to stay with a local karate player during the two-day championship. An interactive voice response system (IVRS) will be introduced to provide information round-the-clock for tourists. A release from Dasara Tourism Sub-committee said that IVRS would enable dissemination of information on hotels, travel houses, Dasara- related activities and other tourism-related information. The Tourism Committee said those interested in providing sponsorship to IVRS should contract Conservator of Forests, Mysore Circle, G.N. Srikantaiah on 94484-10224.
