BPL cards: ex-MLA to protest against `anomalies'

Staff Correspondent

`The Government has failed to keep its word'

MYSORE: A. Ramdas, former BJP MLA, has threatened to stage a protest against the "irregularities" in the distribution of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards in Mysore.

At a press conference here on Sunday, he said that thousands of poor people from Mysore, who had been deprived of the cards, would join him in the protest to be staged in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mysore on September 12.

With the allotment of ration through the new BPL cards scheduled to begin from September 15, old ration cards will become invalid. "Thousands of people are suffering owing to the improper distribution of BPL cards," he said.

Mr. Ramdas pointed out that he had filed a writ petition in the High Court questioning the yardstick adopted for distribution of BPL cards. In response to that, Advocate General of Karnataka had filed an affidavit in the court, promising to put up a list of beneficiaries in all the local bodies before August so that there was time for inclusion of more families, which had been left out. "The Government has failed to honour the commitment it gave to the High Court", he said.

Mr. Ramdas accused the Government of contempt of court. Mr Ramdas said thousands of contempt of court complaints against the Government would be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on September 12. Mr. Ramdas said he would file a contempt of court petition to secure justice for those families who had been denied BPL cards.
