Cabinet posts sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association has sought a 50 per cent share for BCs in the ensuing Cabinet expansion.

In a press release, R. Krishnaiah, president, urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to consider the appeal. He said Ministers now were holding two or more portfolios and as a result there was a lack of focus, consequently hampering development. - Staff Reporter

Girijana Sangham plea

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Girijana Sangham has urged tribal legislators to meet Governor Rameshwar Thakur and express their opposition to Indirasagar (Polavaram) project in view of the Government's reported claim that the Tribal Advisory Council had given its go-ahead.

M. Sriram Naik, general secretary, and K. Lakshman Rao, secretary, said in a statement issued here on Sunday wanted the legislators to act before the Governor sends his report to the Centre. - Special Correspondent

Gelatine sticks seized

Srikakulam: A special party of police carrying out combing operations in the interior areas seized 20 gelatine sticks near Rasulaguda village in Maniga panchayt on Sunday. In the background of reports that Maoists were crossing over into Andhra Pradesh from neighbouring Orissa, combing operations have been intensified in the AOB (Andhra Orissa Border) area. - Special Correspondent

Panther skins seized

Rajahmundry: The police have seized three panther skins from two persons on Sunday and handed over the same to the Forest Department officials.

At a joint press conference on Sunday, S. Ramprasad, Chief Conservator of Forest and B. Srinivasulu, SP, East Godavari, produced the two accused persons — Kakara Nageswara Rao (20) and Sunkara Gopikrishna Reddy (21) of Rampachodavaram — along with seized material. - Staff Reporter

Two boys drowned

KHAMMAM: Two schoolboys were feared drowned in Godumavagu stream in Kothagudem town on Sunday evening. The police said that the boys entered the stream for a swim along with their friends. Onlookers failed rescue the boys even as they were washed away. One of the boys was identified as Vinod, 16. A search is on for the bodies. - Staff Reporter

Couple commits suicide

TIRUPATI: A couple committed suicide in a lodge in the Group Theatres area here on Saturday evening. It is not known if the young man, Chaitanya and the woman, Triveni, were married, but the Tirupati East police have ascertained from their belongings that they belonged to Nellore.

The couple took the extreme step after offering prayers at Tirumala temple. - Staff Reporter

Two die in attack

KURNOOL: Two persons were killed in an attack by a gang at Ambapuram in Kurnool district on Sunday. According to reports, one Maddaiah was stabbed to death by his long-time rival Bala Swami and his relatives with knives. According to Bethamcharla SI Ramesh, Bala Swami, who also suffered stab wounds during the attack, succumbed later. - Staff Reporter

Genco staffer murdered

NALGONDA: An employee of the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation Mohammed Abdul Rasheed, 46, was allegedly killed at Nagarjunasagar dam on Saturday. According to the Vijayapuri (North) police, the body of the junior plant assistant was found in a pool of blood near the electric sub-station. Some miscreants allegedly stoned him to death. - Staff Reporter

Two washed away

ADILABAD: Two persons were washed away in the Kuntala waterfall on Sunday afternoon. Saleem, 30, of Indiranagar in Nirmal town, driver of a jeep in which two families had come for a picnic slipped into the waterfall when he went to have a dip. Kamruddin from Korutla in Karimnagar district who was present nearby was also washed away as he tried to save Saleem. - Staff Reporter

AWAY to supply artificial limbs

KADAPA: Anti-Faction Forum of Andhra Pradesh (AWAY) will provide artificial limbs known as Jaipur foot to persons maimed in factional feuds and attacks, according to State vice-president M. Vivekananda Reddy.

In a statement on Saturday, he said that those who permanently lost their limbs could apply to AWAY, Plot 5, Second Floor, Durga Enclave, Radhakrishna Nagar, Hyderguda, Hyderabad by September 27. Awareness meets would be held in faction-prone villages in Kadapa district and victim-families would be provided loans and employment avenues, Mr. Reddy said. An essay-writing contest on `Factions - Impact on society' would be organised at Annamayya Junior College here on September 24, he added. More details can be had on 08562-241778.

Literacy award

KADAPA: T. Jayachandra, nodal prerak of Peddacheppali in Kamalapuram mandal and K. Anuradha, assistant prerak of Adapur village in Nandalur mandal, received Satyen Mitra Literacy Award from vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekawat at New Delhi on Friday, according to an official statement.

Kadapa Collector M. T. Krishna Babu had received the award granted for Kadapa district for promotion of literacy. Kadapa district was chosen for the award along with Kollam district in Kerala and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. -Staff Reporter

Pensioners' Day

KADAPA: The 10th of every month will be observed as `Pensioners Day' in Kadapa district.

All sorts of pensions would be disbursed on that day irrespective of whether the day is a Government holiday, district Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Saturday. He directed MPDOs and panchayat secretaries to disburse pensions all over the district on Sunday in the presence of public representatives. Mr. Krishna Babu appealed to public representatives and officials to issue Press statements if pension disbursal would not be made in any panchayats on the 10th. -Staff Reporter

Dental camp

KURNOOL: Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) local branch and Kakatiya Public School conducted a dental camp for school children here on Saturday. Anil Kumar, dentist, explained to the children how to take precautions to stop tooth decay. He said prevention would be more important than going for treatment after losing teeth.

AIDS awareness camp

TIRUPATI: The training programme conducted for NSS programme officers on HIV/AIDS came to a close at SV University's NSS Bhavan on Sunday.

District AIDS Nodal Officer D.L.V. Ramana Rao told the participating officers to spread the knowledge gained by them. AIDS Coordinator of Kadapa district Ms. Ramadevi lauded the initiative to train the trainers.

Commemoration programme

ELURU: The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) will organise a week-long programme to commemorate the Telangana armed struggle in different parts of the district from September 11, according to its secretary D. Prabhakar.

The party cadre will pay floral tributes to Telangana martyrs at their stupas at Denduluru and hold meetings in the city, Chintalapudi and Jangareddygudem as part of the programme, he said. - Staff Reporter

Jute workers mass protest

VIZIANAGARAM : Jute workers of Aruna, East Coast and Bobbili jute mills on Sunday went on a mass protest and organised rasta-roko on NH-43, at Collectorate in the town and at the factory premises in Bobbili in protest against the Hoogly management's decision to reduce from 21 shifts in a week to 12 shifts. The IFTU district secretary, B. Shankara Rao said the decision would make 700 employees jobless. The protest was lifted after the district administration promised to hold discussions with the management. - Correspondent

NCC training camp

VISAKHAPATNAM : The combined NCC Annual Training Camp-IV commenced at Meghadripeta for senior division, junior division (boys) and senior and junior wings (girls). According to Camp Commandant Ramesh Chandra, 500 cadets from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts are participating in the 12-day camp. The aim of the camp is to select and train cadets for the Republic Day camp at Delhi. Also, cadets will be selected for best cadet scholarship of Cadet Welfare Society. - Correspondent

Seminar on nutritious food

Kakinada : The importance of nutritious food for healthy growth was stressed by Vasundhara Mehar, chairperson Lions Club Kakinada at the seminar on nutritive values of food organised by the club at the Anganwadi centre in Ramanaiahpet. Adabala Rathna Prasadarao former Sarpanch, T Devaki Devi Club former chairperson, Pendem Sridevi Club secretary spoke. Later prizes were given away to Y Padmavati, K. Padmavati and G Pramila who clinched the top three positions in the competitions conducted on the importance of nutritious food. - Correspondent

YSR to attend DCC meet

Kakinada : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would attend the East Godavari District Congress Committee meeting to be held at Rajahmundry, according to Thota Narasimham district Congress president. He said on Sunday Union Minister of State for Defence M. M. Pallamraju would also participate.

He wanted all the MLAs, MPs, ZPTCs, MPTCs, Mayor, Corporators, Municipal Chairmen and others to attend the meeting. - Correspondent

School for child labourers

SRIKAKULAM : Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao inaugurated a school for child labourers who were school dropouts in Relliveedhi here on Sunday. The school was set up under the National Child Labour Eradication project being implemented by the Rao's Rural Development Society. Under this project 50 school dropouts would be enrolled and after necessary education, would be sent to regular schools. - Special Correspondent
