CHENNAI: The Indira Eye Institute for Diabetes was recently launched here to provide quality care for diabetic eye disorders with the latest state-of-the-art eye evaluation and management facilities. The institute is located adjacent to its parent organisation, the Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre in Gopalapuram. Institute Head M. Rema said it would offer comprehensive eye care for all disorders associated with diabetes under one roof. The centre will house facilities for performing grading of diabetic retinopathy using an international grading system. The diagnostic tests for eye disorders in diabetes include colour digital photography, fundus flourescein angiography (FFA), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and computerised field testing. Therapeutic facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment such as Argon laser treatment, ND-Yag laser for treatment of diabetic retinal disorders and cataract surgery by phacoemulsification. A well-equipped operation theatre is also available at the institute. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most important disorders among the various complications of diabetes.
