UDUPI: MP Manorama Madhwaraj said on Sunday that she was against setting up of the 1,015 MW coal-based Nagarjuna Power Project at Yellur in Udupi district. She was speaking at an interaction programme of political parties organised by the Nagarjuna Ushna Vidyut Sthavara Virodhi Samiti, here. Ms. Madhwaraj said the Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL) was making baseless allegations against her that she had cleared the project when she was the Industries Minister in Veerappa Moily's Government. She challenged the company to make public the records concerning the permission. The people of Udupi district opposed the project because of the harmful effects on environment. If the State Government was keen on the project, it should allow NPCL to set it up at Raichur, Ms. Madhwaraj said. President of Udupi district unit of Congress M.A. Gafoor said the Udupi Zilla Panchayat and the Udupi Taluk Panchayat had rejected the project. General secretary of the Kaup unit of BJP K. Naveen Shetty said 12 taluk panchayat members and four zilla panchayat members of the BJP from Kaup Assembly Constituency were against it. Convener of the Samiti Somanath Nayak said the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the fishermen and farmers of the district opposed the project.
