CHENNAI : The HCL concert series was launched on Sunday in Chennai, a city with which the information technology company shares a special history. It was in Chennai that HCL Infosystems limited got its first order 30 years ago.

"We got our first business from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. They ordered machines from us just based on specifications of the product," said Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of HCL Infosystems. "Chennai is an important memory in the history of the company."

The HCL concert series was launched in association with The Music Academy Madras. Sudha Raghunathan rendered the inaugural concert.

As part of the series, concerts will be held at The Music Academy every month. The concert series will promote young talent, said Mr. Chowdhry.

The series was first launched in New Delhi, in association with the India Habitat Centre, in 1998. As part of the series, an unbroken pattern of four cultural performances — two dance performances and two classical concerts — are being held. The series has featured artistes such as Madhup Mudgal, Sonal Mansingh, Rita Ganguly and Geeta Chandran.

N. Murali, president of The Music Academy, and Managing Director, The Hindu , said the launch of the concert series marked a coming together of "two special organisations, which share some common values and characteristics."

He said both organisations were globally renowned and were committed to promoting classic arts in the country. "The HCL concert series is conceived as a "salute to excellence in human endeavour," he said.
