COIMBATORE: The Resident Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) plans to involve members of women self-help groups (SHG) in its `Alagana Kovai' project, which is a joint initiative of the residents of an area to keep their locality clean. The association conducted awareness meeting for about 20 groups in the Peelamedu area on Sunday. Details about segregation of domestic waste at source, waste collection, composting and recycling of items such as waste paper and plastic were explained in the meeting. According to a RAAC representative, the association proposed to extend its `Alagana Kovai' project to select parts of the city as a joint project with the local body. It will take up cleaning of roads and collection of segregated waste under the project. The women SHG members can be involved in some of these works. The representative said that 20 groups in Peelamedu had about 350 members. They would be trained in collection of segregated waste, for which the RAAC would engage trainers. It would also provide the SHG members with equipment to recycle waste paper and plastic. The women would also be trained to make manure from bio-degradable waste. They would be able to earn by marketing these products. A team would be sent to Chennai on Monday to study waste management taken up by a private firm. In places where a substantial number of SHG members reside, the project can be extended. An awareness meeting would be organised for SHG members of Singanallur area, numbering over 600, next, said the representative. So far, the RAAC has covered about 30 residential colonies under the project.
