NSUI to launch anti-ragging drive

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State unit of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) will launch a drive against ragging in all colleges across the State next week by constituting teams and setting up helplines for victims.

Ch. Vamsi Chand Reddy, president, said on Sunday that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would release the anti-ragging posters brought out by the union on September 12.

The unit would immediately take up the drive in all institutions, particularly engineering and medical colleges.

Taking a serious note of recent incidents in the Kurnool Medical College and an engineering college at Rajam in Srikakulam district, he said the NSUI would hold meetings on the ills of ragging.

The meetings would explain the stringent legal action that could be initiated against erring students under the Anti-Ragging Act of 1997, Dr. Reddy said. He said that a helpline number would be given to each district.
