Lack of education blamed for exploitation of women

Staff Reporter

`If they are empowered, they will have the courage to fight against the system'

Bangalore: Lack of education is one of the reasons for the exploitation of women, Vasu, history professor, Bangalore University, has said.

She was speaking at a State-level convention against harassment of students organised by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) here on Sunday.

Courage

Dr. Vasu said often society was to blame if a woman opted for sex determination test. If women were empowered, they would have the courage to fight against exploitation, she added.

Nearly 150 representatives from 20 districts in the State participated in the convention. The representatives agreed upon four demands.

The SFI will submit a memorandum in support of these demands to Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy soon.

Demands

The demands included formation of a committee against sexual harassment in all educational institutions as per the Supreme Court judgment in this regard; ban on obscene banners and posters in public places; and separate toilet and rest room facility for girls in all educational institutions. Members of the SFI urged the Government to provide free education up to the degree level for poor girls.

Protest

B. Rajashekhara Murthy, president of the State unit of the SFI, said the federation would organise a State-level protest on September 20.

"Members of the SFI will stage protests in all district headquarters.

"An all-India jatha has also been planned during the last week of October," he added.

He said that the members would meet Union Minister for Human Resource Arjun Singh and submit a memorandum to him.

They would urge him to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in various elected bodies.

Mr. Rajashekhara Murthy said the Union Minister would also be urged to introduce reservation for women from poor families in all higher education institutions.
