Thiruvananthapuram: Local residents seized a large amount of liquor from a private vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident in the city on Sunday night. Residents at Kochu Ulloor intercepted the vehicle, a Toyota Innova bearing the registration number KL-01-AK-8354, after it allegedly knocked down two persons of a family at Poongumoodu. The driver and two other passengers abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot. Ulloor ward president of the Congress Babu Arackal said the van had also collided with an autorickshaw. Local people who inspected the vehicle found nearly 350 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor. They alerted the police. Muhammad Bari, Circle Inspector, Medical College, said none of the liquor bottles had the seal of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation. The police suspect the liquor to be "seconds," a liquor trade jargon for alcohol sourced directly from distilleries without paying Excise duty. Some of the bottles carried the seal of the Defence Canteen service. The police were also investigating whether the liquor was illegally diverted from Army canteens. The police recovered a mobile telephone from the vehicle. The CI said efforts were on to identify the owners of the vehicle. The police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
