Held for rash driving

NEW DELHI: A man who had appeared on a prominent television news channel on Saturday driving a Tata Indica car from the co-passenger's seat was arrested on Sunday on charges of mischief and rash driving. He was later released on bail.

In an interview to the news channel, Harish Tomar, a resident of Shahdara in North-East Delhi, had claimed that on several occasions he had driven the car sitting on the co-passenger's seat. He also demonstrated his skill on being repeatedly asked to do so by the programme anchors and correspondents. This landed him into trouble as the Dwarka police registered a case against him for rash driving and doing mischief.

Earlier, a person had on his mobile-camera recorded Harish "moving" in a vehicle without anyone on the driver's seat. The video clip was aired by the news channel for hours.

Man commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man, on whom Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had served a notice asking him to demolish his house as the adjoining road was to be widened, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Nangloi in West Delhi early on Sunday. In a suicide note, he said he was ending his life as he could not see his house being razed.

According to the police, the incident came to light around 4 a.m. when Satbir Singh, a labourer, was found hanging from the ceiling in his house. The police recovered a suicide note from his possession, in which he said he had built the house from hard-earned money and he did not have the means to construct another one.

In its notice, DDA had reportedly given Satbir three-day time to demolish his house.

Man falls to death

NEW DELHI: A young man died after he fell from the 6th floor of a mall in neighbouring Noida in the early hours of Sunday. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Abhishek, a resident of Rohini in North-West Delhi. Enquiries revealed that he was in an inebriated state when he fell from the sixth floor. His fiancée Parul and brother-in-law Deepak had met him in the mall earlier on Saturday night.

Jeweller shot at

NEW DELHI: A 33-year-old jeweller was shot at and injured before being allegedly robbed of jewellery worth lakhs by three criminals at Rohini in North-West Delhi on Sunday. While one of the culprits was caught by area residents, the victim is stated to be out of danger.

The incident took place in the afternoon when the assailants entered the jewellery shop of Vikas Jain, shot at him and fled with some ornaments. Two of the robbers managed to flee, but the third was overpowered by area residents. He was thrashed and then handed over to the police. During interrogation, he identified himself as Ashraf.

Vikas, who sustained a bullet injury in the shoulder, was rushed to Saroj Hospital from where he was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Power supply disruption

NEW DELHI: Delhi Transco Limited has informed that power supply may be disrupted in the Inderpuri, Krishi Kunj, Gopinath Bazar and Saraswati Garden areas and their adjoining localities due to erection of a 100 MVA 220/33 KV transformer at the Naraina 220 KV sub-station on Monday.

Stating that in order to connect the transformer in the existing system, shut down of the complete sub-station is proposed to be taken from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, DTL has apologised for inconvenience, if any, that may be caused due to the work.
