MOSCOW: Russia successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine from the ice-bound North Pole, Russian Defence Minister said. The nuclear submarine K-84 launched the missile on Saturday, and all three test warheads hit their targets at a testing range in Arkhangesk region, Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov told President Vladimir Putin on Sunday. The launch was a difficult exercise in terms of navigation and personnel skills, Mr. Ivanov said. It is the first time in 11 years that Russia test-fired a submarine-borne missile from underwater in the North Pole. Experts said submarines patrolling in the ice-clad seas cannot be detected by enemy radars and are hard to hit even after they have fired its missiles. Another missile was fired from a nuclear-powered submarine stationed in the Pacific. The missile's two warheads also hit their targets at the same testing range.
