Narayanasamy appeals to JIPMER staff to call off strike

Special Correspondent

Issue should not be politicised: AICC general secretary "Autonomy as such is not going to materialise immediately as it involves adoption of an Act in Parliament"

Pondicherry: The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) V. Narayanasamy, has called upon the employees in the Centrally administered Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here to call off their indefinite strike and resume duty in the larger interest of patients.

(The protest was launched on September 8 against the Union Cabinet's decision to convert JIPMER into an autonomous institution).

He told newspersons here on Monday that the Union Health Ministry should also convene a joint meeting with the representatives of JIPMER staff to get their views on the move.

The interest of the patients, security of workers' jobs and efficient administration should be the major priorities during the discussions with the representatives.

The Union Cabinet had taken a decision and autonomy as such was not going to materialise immediately as it involved adoption of an Act in Parliament as well as its possible subsequent reference to the Standing Committee. All the views and opinions of the workers and other sections could be enlisted and appropriately accommodated in the proposed legislation. This would involve a long process and hence the workers need not be worried over anything.

He appealed to the staff to resume duty by dropping their current strike.

Mr. Narayanasamy also said that there should be no room for intrusion of politics into the agitation. A congenial atmosphere should be created. Asked if the Pondicherry Administration was formally consulted by the Centre before taking a decision, he said this question should be raised only before the Ministry here and not before him.
