Supriya Sule declared elected

Mumbai: Supriya Sule, daughter of Nationalist Congress Party chief and Union Minister Sharad Pawar, was on Monday formally declared elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra.

Ms. Sule had a smooth sailing to the Upper House as no political party put up a candidate against her and the papers of three independent candidates were rejected during scrutiny.

Result a formality

Monday being the last date to withdraw nominations, she was declared elected unopposed, though the result was a mere formality.

The bypoll, necessitated by the death of NCP member Vasant Chavan on July 11, was scheduled for September 18. — PTI
