CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Health Department has ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the delivery of a baby outside the maternity ward of the Civil Hospital in Gurgaon. Action would be taken in case any employee was found guilty, according to the Civil Surgeon of Gurgaon, Dr. Dharmvir Saharan. He disclosed that Kamla Devi, wife of Vakil Sahni, was admitted to the maternity ward of the hospital with full term normal pregnancy having labour pains at 7-10 p.m. on Sunday. The staff nurse on duty asked the patient for her previous antenatal record, if any, but her attendants "expressed ignorance''. Later, the attendants asked that a pain-relieving injection be administered to the patient but the staff nurse refused to do so "as a normal delivery was a natural process and no painkiller was to be given during labour''. Dr. Saharan said that the patient's attendants reportedly got furious and the staff nurse asked the male attendant to leave the maternity ward since he was not permitted there. Ignoring medical advice, the attendants took the patient out of the maternity ward and she delivered the baby outside though inside the hospital premises.
