CHANDIGARH: Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh on Monday announced re-classification of Rewari and Palwal (Faridabad) towns as Class "A'' cities and Cheeka (Kaithal) as Class "B''. He said these towns had been re-classified on the basis of the 2001 Census. Consequently, the rates for House Rent Allowance ofthe Government employees posted in these cities would also increase as applicable to the new classification. He said the status of cities was upgraded on the basis of the latest Census population figures of 2001 and a slab system had been made for this purpose. A city comprising a population of over one lakh was classified as an `A' Class city and cities with the population from 25,000 to one lakh were given the status of `B' Class. The population of Rewari and Palwal cities according to the 2001 Census was 100,684 and 100,722, respectively. Hence these had been classified as Class A. Similarly, Cheeka city in Kaithal district had been classified a Class B city as its population was 32,128. Mr.Birender Singh said the State Government had upgraded the status of Jind, Kurukshetra and Kaithal to Class A and Safidon to Class B on the demands of various employees' associations last year.
