Delhi court grants bail to Chandigarh doctor

`Doctor issued fake certificate to an accused in Jessica Lal murder case'

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to Chandigarh-based Dr. J.S. Bedi who had allegedly issued a fake medical certificate to Vikas Gill, one of the accused in the Jessica Lal murder case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Kamini Lau ordered Dr. Bedi's release on his furnishing a bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh with one surety of like amount.

Ms. Lau granted bail to him when the prosecution submitted that the police had completed his custodial interrogation.

The ACMM directed Dr. Bedi to appear before the investigating officer of the case on the first Monday of every month and surrender his passport.

Dr. Bedi had surrendered before the ACMM on September 5 following a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.

Vikas Gill had used the certificate from Dr. Bedi for getting exemption from personal appearance in the trial of the Jessica Lal murder case.

Ms. Lau had on August 25 issued a non-bailable warrant against Dr. Bedi on an application by the Delhi police saying that the accused had been avoiding his appearance before them for interrogation in connection with the case. On a Delhi High Court direction, the police registered a case against the doctor in April this year.

The alleged culpability of the doctor had come to light when the police submitted in the High Court that Gill, who was tried and acquitted along with eight other accused in the case in February this year, had left the country without permission of the court during the trial and had been absconding since.

"Vikas Gill had left the country on October 9, 2004, without the permission of the trial court when the trial proceedings were pending. Though his presence in the court was recorded on February 21 this year when the trial court pronounced the judgment in the case, he was not physically present in the courtroom," Delhi police Standing Counsel Mukta Gupta had stated.
