Fire at Vice-Chancellor's residence

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A fire broke out in the residence of Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan on Sunday night.

While a university release said the Vice-Chancellor and other staff suspected the handiwork of some outside forces, the police said it was an accidental fire. The release issued by the university Registrar said the Vice-Chancellor, who was living in the quarters on the campus, heard a loud explosion around 1.a.m. on Sunday. The security personnel extinguished the fire with sand and water and alerted the Fire and Rescue Service.

The Vice-Chancellor sustained minor injuries, the release said.

A spokesman for the Greater Chennai police said preliminary probe showed there was no trace of any explosion. A bomb detection and disposal squad inspected the area and found it to be a case of gas leakage from an LPG cylinder.
