Stalin inaugurates desilting work

TIRUCHI: The Local Administration Minister, M. K. Stalin, on Monday inaugurated the desilting and bund strengthening work on the Koraiyar, the Ariyar and the Kudamuritti here on Monday.

The Public Works Department will execute the work at an estimated cost of Rs.5 crore, as an interim measure, to prevent inundation of low-lying residential colonies along the banks of the rivers, pending execution of the Rs.295-crore flood prevention scheme for which assistance has been sought from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The PWD has also planned to strengthen the bunds of the three rivers at vulnerable stretches where breaches occurred last year. While Rs.3 crore will be spent for the work at the Koraiyar and the Ariyar, Rs. 2 crore has been earmarked for the Kudamuritti.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the launch of the work on the banks of the Kudamuritti, he urged the officials to complete the work at the earliest.

Earlier, he inspected the desilting of drainage channels, taken up by the Corporation at a cost of about Rs.24.70 lakh. The Transport Minister K. N. Nehru, the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, A. Raja, the Forest Minister N. Selvaraj, the Collector Ashish Vachhani, and the Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman accompanied the Minister.
