Venmani memorial meeting on Saturday

KOCHI: Venmani Haridas memorial meeting and presentation of the Venmani award will be held on September 16 at Thodupuzha Krishnatheertham auditorium. Filmmaker Shaji N. Karun would inaugurate the meeting. V. Kaladharan would deliver the memorial lecture. — Staff Reporter

P.P. Thankachan bereaved

KOCHI: Thankamma, wife of P.P. Thankachan, convener of the United Democratic Front, died here on Monday. She was 64. The body will be buried at Akaparambu Jacobite Church, near Cochin International Airport, Nedumbassery, at 4 p.m. after funeral services at their residence at Perumbavoor at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Competition for students

KOCHI: As part of the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas 2006 observance, the Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) and the Union Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources are jointly conducting different competitions for school and college students. Painting competition for students up to Standard 7, quiz for high school students, essay competition for higher secondary students and model making competition for engineering students will be held. Those interested in participating should contact Project Officer, ANERT, Flat No. A 1, Asoka Apartments, Near Civil Station, Kakkanad or at phone number 2428611 before September 25.

Two arrested on charges of stealing

KOCHI: Ernakulam Town Central police arrested two persons on charges of stealing Rs.30,000 from a bus passenger here on Monday. According to the police, Girish, 29, and Jagadeesh, 26, both from Palluruthy, took the cash from a carry-bag of a passenger.

The police team led by sub-inspector D. Asokan arrested the accused from Menaka Junction. They were produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate - II and remanded. — Staff Reporter.
