BANGALORE: To decongest traffic in Shivajinagar and surrounding areas, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) plans to construct flyovers at Shivajinagar Circle and Coles Park junction, Mayor Mumtaz Begum said here on Monday.

Speaking after giving away free sewing machines, sports material and medical relief grants from the Mayor's discretionary quota to beneficiaries in her ward (Shivajinagar), the Mayor said the civic body would give priority towards the development of the area. "We have started refurbishing the Russell Market at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh," she said.

Asserting that there was no dearth of funds for development activities, the Mayor said: "After I became Mayor, Shivajinagar has allocations from my quota as well as the ward grants. These funds will be used for the overall development of the ward."

The Mayor distributed sewing machines to 57 beneficiaries, stipend cheques of Rs. 600 each to 219 trainees, medical relief cheques of Rs. 5,000 each to 26 needy people and sports material to 110 children of the ward.

Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana, president of Karnataka State Olympic Association K Govindraj and jurisdictional BMP officials were present.
