NEW DELHI: Taking suo motu notice of a report appearing in a Hindi daily about a pregnant woman being turned away from Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital for not arranging a unit of blood in advance, the National Human Rights Commission has sent notices to the Delhi Government's Health Secretary and the Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital seeking their comments within two weeks. The Hindi daily "Amar Ujala" had reported on August 18 that Mohammad Afaq was forced to spend 40 hours moving from one government hospital to another for treatment of his pregnant wife Naima. On August 14 he had taken his wife to GTB Hospital where the doctor at the Septic Labour Room recommended a caesarean operation and asked Afaq to arrange one unit of blood before admitting her. Due to Naima's critical condition, Afaq took her to Swami Dayanand Hospital. There, too, he was asked to arrange for a unit of blood before admitting the patient. At the instance of the local MLA, however, the patient was admitted but the doctor on night duty discharged his wife at 11 p.m. without operation for not arranging a unit of blood. Afaq then came back to GTB and Naima was admitted on the condition of arranging blood later. His wife was finally operated upon only after he managed to arrange a unit of blood on August 16.
