dated September 13, 1956: New Pakistan Premier

A coalition Ministry took office in Pakistan on September 12, headed by Mr. H.S. Suhrawardy, the Awami League chief. The coalition partners, the Republican Party and the Awami League, agreed that they would share power equally. President Iskander Mirza had asked Mr. Suhrawardy to form a Government after Mr. Mohammed Ali refused to retain the Premiership. Mr. Husain Shaheed Suhrawardy was born in West Bengal, now part of India, in 1893. He was at one time Deputy Mayor of Calcutta and Secretary of the Bengal Provincial Muslim League. A member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1921 to 1947, he became Minister and later Chief Minister of undivided Bengal immediately before the Partition in 1947.
