Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: National Council of Communist Party of India member and party legislator R. Viswanathan said that before converting the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research into an autonomous body, as had been decided now by the Centre, the Union Health Ministry should give an assurance that the employees in the institute would face no threat to their jobs. Talking to The Hindu on Tuesday, Mr. Viswanathan said that the Union Health Minister should hold talks with representatives of JIPMER employees. The Minister should also have parleys with leaders of political parties and assure that the patient care would be available free of cost. The growth and development of the institute should also suffer no setback. Mr. Viswanathan said the Centre should also ensure that 50 per cent of seats in the first MBBS course (currently 75 seats are available) would be earmarked for the Pondicherry students.
Quota for Pondy
"We have been insisting on self-financing medical colleges earmarking 50 per cent of the total sanctioned strength for the students of Pondicherry domicile. This should be adopted in JIPMER also," he added. He said that the proposed legislation should be framed in such a way that all these assurances should be accommodated as integral part of the Act before making any change in the administrative status of JIPMER.
