Meghna Bal steals the show

Chennai: Delhi's Meghna Bal, a 17-year-old junior, did a commendable job in the women's Open section on the opening day of the Madras Ladies Golf championship with a score of 75 gross at the Cosmo-TNGF course here on Tuesday.

However in the handicap, Sonam Chugh of Mysore stood first with 71 in nett with Meghna and Rupa Gurunath (Chennai) just behind at 72.

Another highlight of the day was the longest drive by the young Saaniya Sharma of Chandigarh who cleared 274 yards. Natasha Williams of South Africa was second (240 yards) and Neeraja of Chennai third (210 yards).

The Chennai golfers did well in the bronze division.

After the Bangalore event, this is the second competition for women to select the Indian team (three main players and one reserve) for the coming Asian Games.

Leading positions (opening day):

Gold Division: Open: 1. Meghna Bal (Delhi) 75 gross, 2. Sonam Chugh (Mysore) 76; Handicap: 1. Sonam Chugh (71 nett), 2. Meghna Bal (72), 3. Rupa Gurunath (72)

Silver division - Open - 1. Aruna Kolandaivel (Coimbatore-86 gross) 2. Aditi Mehta (Pune-87); Handicap: 1. Aditi Mehta (67 nett), 2. Aruna Kolandaivel (70).

Bronze division: Open: 1. Rani Chada (104 gross), 2. Neerja (106), 3. Mala Raju (106); Handicap: 1. Pratisha (76 nett), 2. Mala Raju (77).

Juniors: Open: 1. Meghna Bal (75 gross), 2. Vaishnavi Sinha (Noida 78); Handicap: 1. Aditi Mehta (67 nett), 2. Meghna Bal (72).

Seniors: Open: 1. Aruna Kolandaivel (86 gross), 2. Lalitha Balasubramaniam (TN 90); Handicap: 1. Aruna Kolandaivel (70 nett), 2. Mala Raju (77).

Longest drive: Gold: 1. Saaniya Sharma (Chandigarh 274 yards); Silver: Natasha Williams (S. Africa 240); Bronze: Neerja (Chennai 210).
