Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the standalone combination picture "Moulded in South Africa" (September 12, 2006, page 1) was: "Satyagraha Centenary: Satyagraha, Gandhiji's celebrated technique of non-violent struggle, was born in South Africa a hundred years ago. The photograph [from The Hindu Archives] on the left of the future Mahatma was taken circa 1899 ... ." La. Su. Rengarajan, writer, researcher and Gandhian scholar, points out that the caption should have been: "... In the uniform of a group leader of the Stretcher Bearer Corps during the Zulu Rebellion taken in 1906 ... ."

  • In the feature "The other 9/11" (The Hindu-Magazine, September 10, 2006, page 4), the caption of the accompanying photograph (from The Hindu Photo Library) was: "Satyagraha as an assertion of truth: Gandhiji during the Dandi March." La. Su. Rengarajan points out that it should have been "Gandhiji on a morning walk on Juhu beach, Bombay, taken in 1937."

  • A reader objected to the use of the term "WTC bombing" in "Three 9/11s — choose your own" (Editorial page, September 11, 2006). There was no bombing, but planes crashing on/into the WTC, he added. P. Sainath clarifies that the (American) press has called it "a bombing" as aircraft were used as aerial bombs/missiles. The perpetrators of the act have also been referred to as the "WTC bombers".

  • In the book review "A social institution in transition" ("Book Review" page, September 12, 2006), the sentence was: "The book is neatly structured and the writer does her survey with a wild-angled lens; ... ." As a reader points out, it should have been "wide-angle lens".
