Rangasamy calls on Karunanidhi

Pondicherry: Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy accorded a warm reception to his Tamil Nadu counterpart M. Karunanidhi when he arrived in Pondicherry on Tuesday on his way to Tiruvarur.

Mr. Rangasamy, who held talks with Mr. Karunanidhi, later told The Hindu that it was a courtesy meeting.

Earlier, functionaries of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Pondicherry unit led by its convener R. V. Janakiraman gave Mr. Karunanidhi a reception at Kanagachettykulam.

At Cuddalore, party leaders accorded warm reception to Mr Karunanidhi at Reddichavadi, the entry point to Cuddalore, on Tuesday.

Karpagavinayagam to be CJ of Jharkhand

CHENNAI: Justice M. Karpagavinayagam of the Madras High Court is likely to be sworn in Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand on September 17. The Central notification, elevating Mr. Justice Karpagavinayagam as Chief Justice, was received here on Tuesday.

An official farewell function for the Judge will be held in the court premises here on September 15.

Born in Devakottai in May 1946, Mr. Justice Karpagavinayagam obtained his law degree from the Government Law College in Chennai. He was enrolled as an advocate in 1972. He was appointed Judge of the Madras High Court on January 8, 1996. He has authored several books on law, literature and spiritualism. A Sai Baba devotee, he was also an active member of actor S.V. Sahasranamam's drama troupe during his college days.

A large number of judges, advocates and court officers greeted him on his elevation as Chief Justice. — Special Correspondent

Three held with country-made guns

ERODE: The Special Task Force (STF) police and forest personnel arrested three persons and seized 4 country-made guns from them.

According to police, the police and forest personnel, who were patrolling Kundry Kalmaduvu area in the Kadambur forest on Monday evening, noticed four persons moving inside the forest with guns, and apprehended three of them. The fourth managed to escape. The police seized four guns from the three — John Joseph, Sidhan and Gnanaprakasam of Kundry — and handed them over to Kadambur police. Police are looking for the fourth man. — Staff Reporter

Andhra Pradesh DGP arrives in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Andhra Pradesh Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, arrived here on Tuesday to hold discussions with Tamil Nadu Police officials regarding the investigation into the weaponry haul in Mahbubnagar and Prakasam districts on September 8. He is expected to meet his Tamil Nadu counterpart, D. Mukherjee, on Wednesday.

Earlier, a Superintendent of Police from Andhra Pradesh, Srinivas Reddy, had arrived in the city. He held discussions with officials of the "Q" branch Criminal Investigation Department, on Tuesday, who had taken over the case from the Chennai Police. Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that no clue had been obtained regarding the whereabouts of the person who sent the weapons from Chennai to Andhra Pradesh. More details could be available only after the consignor is nabbed or the unit (s), which manufactured the empty rocket shells and launchers, are known. Investigations so far only revealed that three consignments had been transported from a godown at Ambattur in Chennai to the neighbouring State.

Medical camp held

KARAIKAL: The Centre for Education and Development Alternative (CEDA) trust, an NGO engaged in tsunami rehabilitation work, conducted a free medical camp at T. R. Pattinam here on Monday for more than 300 people including 150 children.

Advocates observe fast

PERAMBALUR: Advocates went on a day's fast in front of the Gandhi statue here on Tuesday, demanding election to the Perambalur Bar Association. They said that although the term of office had come to a close a few months ago, no election had been notified so far by the Bar. They urged the office-bearers of the association to conduct the election immediately.

Teachers' counselling on September 16, 17

Tiruchi: The second phase of counselling for Government teachers in the district would be held at the St. Anne's Middle School, Melapudur, in the city on September 16 and 17. The counselling on September 16 would be for teachers seeking promotions as well as transfers within the block, while the one on September 17 would be for teachers seeking transfer from one block to another block and mutual transfers, an official press release issued here on Tuesday said.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.28 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 10,111 cusecs and the outflow, 12,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Man rescued

ERODE: The Fire and Rescue Service personnel rescued a man who fell into a tub containing molasses. Mani (55) Manickkampalayam, working in a private gingelly oil mill, fell into the tub. He has been admitted to Government Headquarters Hospital here.

Man killed in accident

ERODE: A man was killed when a lorry hit the moped on which he was travelling from behind near Thalavamalai near here on Monday.

The police identified the deceased as Duraisamy (37) of Avalpoondurai, a catering contractor.

Free medical camp

ERODE: A free medical camp was organised for tribals at Arepalayam, near Hassanure, on Sunday by the Erode Idhayam Narpani Movement, Lions Club of Erode Everest and MYRADA.

A team of dental surgeons, gynaecologists and others treated 287 patients in the camp.

Pregnant women too attended the camp. Free tablets were provided to various patients.

Such camps will be organised on a regular basis in the village, office-bearers of these organisations said.

Crime prevention on the rise

ERODE: During the last five months, 292 people were arrested and Rs. 56 lakh worth stolen properties recovered in the district, the Superintendent of Police, Sonal V. Misra, said in a press release here on Tuesday.

Ms. Misra said 86 per cent of the crimes reported during this period were detected and 80 per cent of the properties recovered.

Fishermen stay away from sea

Nagercoil : Fishermen in the coastal areas did not venture into sea on Tuesday following heavy rain in the district. School students and office-goers were put to untold hardship.

The maximum amount of rainfall of 32 mm was recorded at Perunchani followed by 31.6 in Puthen dam, 29.2 in Chittar I, 27 in Surulode, 26 in Chittar II, 11 in Boothapandi, 10.2 in Nagercoil and 5.2 in Mayladi.

The level in Pechipparai dam stood at 30.40 feet against the full capacity of 48 feet, 38.10 feet in Perunchani against the total capacity of 77 feet, 5.18 feet in Chittar I against the total capacity of 18 feet and 5.28 feet in Chittar I against the total capacity of 18 feet.

Retired VAO murdered

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who murdered a retired village administrative officer of Kailkkavilai on Tuesday.

According to the police, Nesan (65) was sleeping in his house when they attacked him with sickle, owing to enmity. He died on the spot.

Sangam plea

MADURAI : The Madurai Tamil Sangam has urged the State Government to name the Tamil University after Pon. Pandithurai Thevar, founder of the Fourth Tamil Sangam.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the Syndicate and general body meeting of the Sangam here on Sunday.

The members also planned to celebrate the centenary of the Sangam in a grand manner and resolved to invite the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for the function. — Staff Reporter
