CHENNAI: Members for all welfare boards would be appointed soon, Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan said here on Monday. Distributing the State Safety Awards and the "Shram Vir" awards at a function jointly organised by the National Safety Council, Tamil Nadu chapter, and the Department of Inspectorate of Factories, the Minister said 92 per cent of the work force in the State belonged to the unorganised sector. It was for their welfare that the Government had set up welfare boards. He claimed that the industrial accident rate in the State was negligible thanks to constant monitoring by the Government and the cooperation of workers and managements. He said these awards had been instituted to encourage the management and workers to adopt various safety standards in their factory premises. Under the "Shram Vir" award category, six workers won the first prize of Rs.5000 each, 12 second prizes of Rs.3000 each were shared by 19 employees and 30 third prizes of Rs.1000 each were won jointly by 48 employees. Safety awards were presented to 131 managements.
Appeal to managements
Labour Secretary Ramesh Kumar Khanna, who presided over the event, said these awards were instituted by the Government to encourage and enthuse the employers and employees in accident prevention. He appealed to managements and workers to adhere to various safety norms prescribed by the Government to reduce accident rates in their establishments. Chief Inspector of Factories K.A. Mohammed Aziz explained various measures being taken by the Government to prevent accidents in factories.
