India's first citizen, now virtually too

President Kalam's website records one crore hits on a single day

President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam might have earned his reputation with children, but he has now also carved out a unique place for himself in cyberspace. The website of the First Citizen of the country -- even "virtually" now -- has become extremely popular on the Internet.

With one crore hits on a single day, August 15, the President's official website is certainly one of the most accessed ones as far as Government sites go.

"The people who access the site cut across all sections. But there are a lot of students and scientists who log on to the site. The website also gets a lot of interest from people abroad. We are in the process of analysing the data to see how popular the website is abroad. The website has received 12 crore hits through August,'' says a Rashtrapati Bhavan official.

A sort of tour through the thoughts of Dr. Kalam, the website has not only his speeches but also his poems. Reaching out to more than just the average net-surfer, it also has a voice applet for the visually challenged.

There is also a section on new additions made by the President to the Mughal Gardens.

A bit of "green'' on the website, the Herbal Garden section has pictures of all the herbs that have been planted in the garden along with their descriptions.

The most popular section on the website, of course, is the Children's Corner, where children can post their questions to Dr. Kalam and he answers them. -- Mandira Nayar
