Student's suicide triggers protests

VIJAYAWADA: Students of Y.V. Rao Siddhartha College of Education at Kanuru, near here, staged a dharna on the college premises on Tuesday, alleging that Ramakrishna, one of their colleagues, committed suicide, as he was unable to bear the stress caused by teachers. Ramakrishna committed suicide at his home in Vishwanadhapalli village in Koduru mandal on Monday by consuming pesticide. - Staff Reporter

Anti-ragging drive

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday released anti-ragging posters brought out by the State unit of the National Students' Union of India. The release of the posters marks the launch of a weeklong anti-ragging drive by the union. - Special Correspondent

TTD move flayed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh West unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad has described the TTD Board's decision to provide `boondi' to devotees as hasty, unnecessary and against tradition. The provision of `boondi' would reduce the temple premises into an eatery, it felt. - Special Correspondent

Call to cut fee

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union has asked the Education Department to reduce the fee for revaluation of SSC answers. In a statement on Tuesday, it said the fee reduction would enable students belonging to poorer sections to use the facility. -Special Correspondent

Councillors held

ADILABAD: A dozen councillors of Adilabad Municipality were taken into preventive custody by I Town police on Tuesday on a complaint given by Municipal Chairman Digambar Rao Patil and Commissioner Shahid Masood. They had prevented the Chairman and Commissioner from entering the office in protest against alleged discrepancy in allocation of flood relief funds in their wards. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Southern Regional Transmission System-I of the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 by the International Certification Services, Mumbai, an accredited certifying body of the Quality Council of India. - Special Correspondent

8 held, illicit liquor seized

WARANGAL: Prohibition and Excise personnel arrested eight persons and seized 150 litres of illicitly distilled liquor on Monday. The police also seized a scooter and destroyed 1,000 litres of fermented jaggery wash. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Tuesday arrested Special Deputy Tahasildar working in Land Acquisition unit of Telugu Ganga Project Unit-1, Mohd. Osman Basha, at his office on charge of receiving Rs. 3,000 bribe from a person. - Staff Reporter

New mining policy soon

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Centre would come out a new mining policy to make minerals a national wealth so that it could be utilised by industrial units in the entire country, Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbarami Reddy said on Tuesday. He said the issue would be taken up during a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 26. - Special Correspondent

Hindi award

HYDERABAD: P. Vijayaraghava Reddy will be awarded `Akhil Bharatiya Hindi Seva Puraskar' by the Agra-based Kendriya Hindi Sansthan for his contribution to Hindi literature. The award will be presented by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on September 14.

MRPS drops rally plans

HYDERABAD: The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) on Tuesday announced that it had dropped plans for a rally (atmagourava maha pradarsna) by weaker sections in Warangal on September 25 after TRS leader K. Chandrasekhara Rao expressed regret for his comments. - Special Correspondent

Baby stolen from hospital

Madanapalle: A two-year-old girl, Athi Yahaja, was stolen from M.L.L.Hospital here on September 9. She was admitted to the hospital as she was speech impaired. The child had 40 gm jewellery on her body, it is learnt. Her mother had left the baby outside the lab and had gone in to consult the technicians. When she came out, the baby was missing. — Correspondent

ICFAI internship

TIRUPATI: ICFAI has unveiled a new flexible internship programme for its students. The facility, initially restricted to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune centres, has recently been extended to Tirupati.

The programme is offered in association with Cygnus Business Consulting and Research and is the first of its kind in M.S (Finance) and MBA, an ICFAI release said. — Staff Reporter

Free eye camp

CHITTOOR: A free eye camp will be organised by Sri Jain Sangh, Chittoor at PCR Junior College on Sunday. Only those white ration cards are eligible for treatment in this camp. Farmer electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: A farmer of Muchukota village in Pedda Pappur mandal of the district, K. Sriraumulu (35), was electrocuted on Tuesday. According to the police, the farmer's wife was drying clothes on a wire tied to an electric pole near their house, when she suffered an electric shock. Sriramulu pushed her aside and in the process was electrocuted. — Staff Reporter

Couple found dead

ANANTAPUR: The charred bodies of a couple, Ravikumar (28) and Sudha (23) of Kasala Veedhi in Guntakal town, were found in their house on Tuesday. According to the police, the relations between the couple had soured recently as Ravikumar had been consuming liquor frequently. But the police could not conclude whether the couple had committed suicide. — Staff Reporter

Caretaker drowned

ANANTAPUR: A caretaker of summer storage tank which supplies drinking water to Guntakal town Shankarappa (55) was found dead in the tank on Tuesday. According to the police, he could have fallen into the tank accidentally on Monday. He did not know swimming. — Staff Reporter

Student wins bronze in athletics

Kakinada : A student of ninth class of Akshara school- K.Amulya has excelled herself in Athletics and won three bronze medals in javelin throw, discus throw and shotput at the CBSE South Zone Athletics Meet held at Sri Swamy Narayan Gurukul International Vidyalaya Hyderabad from September 7 to 9, according to V Rama Devi Akshara school principal. - Correspondent

Local body members honoured

Kakinada : The recently elected sarpanch, MPTCs and ward members of S.Achyuthapuram, a suburb, were honoured under the auspices of all religions at a function here on Tuesday. L. Satyanarayana retired deputy director of medical and health services presided. The priests and elders of three religions- Hindu, Christian and Muslim honoured the elected members in a traditional manner. M. Mohan Rao attended as chief guest. - Correspondent

AKNU appointment

Rajahmundry: Adikavi Nannya University administration has appointed Gummadi Samuel Moses honorary course coordinator of the university. AKNU in-charge Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopala Reddy issued orders to this effect on Tuesday. Mr. Moses will now work under C. Ratnam, Officer on Special Duty. As a professor of chemistry in Government Autonomous College, Mr. Moses is working as guide to M.Phil,. Ph.D. and degree students. - Staff Reporter
