RAMANATHAPURAM:
Eleven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees suspected to have links with terrorist outfits escaped from a quarantine camp at Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the refugees, who arrived at the Rameswaram coast in boats, were moved to the quarantine camp by `Q' Branch sleuths for interrogation. They managed to give the guards on duty a slip and escaped. A large contingent of armed police personnel were deployed along the coast on Tuesday evening to trace them.
Alert sounded
An alert has been sounded in the southern districts following the incident. "The refugees were taken to the quarantine camp for verification of their antecedents. A health check-up was also done to detect contagious infections if any. The 11 refugees escaped and a combing operation is on to take them into custody," a senior police official said.
