Chikungunya: the mosquito breeds only in stagnant fresh water

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation health officials say medicines are given to control fever and relieve pain in an effort to allay fears and misconceptions about chikungunya viral infection.

Aedes mosquito that causes dengue and chikungunya breeds only in stagnant fresh water. Even coolers and air conditioners could be breeding grounds for these vectors, say vector control officials of the Corporation. Vector control is done in larval and adult stages. The Corporation sprays fresh water containers with a chemical that does not harm the consumer but destroys the larvae. The residual effect will prevent breeding for some time but people should keep dry grinding stones and objects where water can collect.

Paracetamol, either given as an injection or drug, will induce sweat and bring down body temperature. Painkillers are given as relievers and their effect lasts for eight hours. Once infected, the body develops immunity to the virus and any relapse is only an aggravation of underlying ailment. He has urged private hospitals and doctors to notify and share the names of patients treated by them with the zonal health officers. The civic body will organise home visits and field-level workers will also carry fogging.
