CHENNAI: A host of speakers at a function here on Tuesday stressed the need for building a temple for Lord Ram at Ayodhya. Murli Manohar Joshi, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, said "the reconstruction of the Ayodhya temple is, to me, synonymous with the reconstruction of this country." Dr. Joshi, who presided over the function to mark 80th birthday of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad international president, Ashok Singhal, said that under the leadership of Mr. Singhal, "we will certainly construct the Ram temple." The BJP leader commended the VHP leader for "dedication and commitment" to the cause of Hinduism and welfare of Hindu society. S. Vedantam, international vice-president of the VHP, referred to the reconstruction of temples at Mathura and Kashi for Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva respectively. The emphasis of "Hindu dharma" was, Kanchi Sankaracharya said, to give equal treatment to all. Hinduism respected other faiths. K.S. Sudharshan, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, said that through the movement for the construction of Ram temple, Mr. Singhal electrified Hindus society. Vasundhara Raje, Rajasthan Chief Minister, praised Mr. Singhal for his qualities of sacrifice and hard work. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, said his Government would constitute an autonomous body comprising spiritual leaders for managing temples. Subramanian Swamy, president of Janata Party, called for fighting terrorism.
