Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has gone for Very High Frequency (VHF) wireless sets for establishing instant communication with its field staff.

Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran told reporters that 82 VHF walkie-talkie sets for field staff and 25 wireless base sets fitted on Corporation vehicles for head of the departments and officers would ensure instant communication with the field staff for ensuring swift reaction to public complaints.

The procurement of wireless sets with a coverage radius of about 45 km at a cost of Rs 4 lakh comes as a replacement for the five-year-old wireless system that the Corporation had hitherto covering a range of only 20 km. With the old system, establishing instant communication with the officials in suburbs, Siruvani drinking water treatment plant and reservoir area always proved a problem. Getting dam level and water supply readings from Siruvani used to be a tedious task, since the wireless used to fail because of the distance. The VHF sets are being given to field staff such as Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers, especially those dealing with water supply and sewerage and Under Ground Drainage (UGD) systems maintenance besides sanitary inspectors.

The public could call the Corporation base control station at 0422-2390261. The call would be transferred to the information centre where the wireless base operator would be positioned. The information would be passed on to the respective field officers. The officials have been asked to be available on the wireless from 6 a.m. to late night.
