Bangalore: The All-India Loco Running Staff Association on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the Diesel Loco Shed in Krishnarajapuram to draw the attention of the officials concerned to the demands with regard to the working conditions of loco pilots and assistant loco pilots. At a meeting, which was inaugurated by G. Rajan, Central Vice-President of All India Station Masters' Association, the association members urged the authorities to upgrade the locomotives and driving cabs on the principles of ergonomics. They urged the administration to ensure uniformity in the design and placement of driving cab equipment in the view of safety . Owing to the unscientific design of driving cabs, loco pilots are suffering from occupational diseases, they claimed. The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) considered the safe limit of exposure to noise as 90db. The noise from the whistle of the engine at a distance of one metre was around 110db. The National Institute of Occupational Health had warned that the engine drivers exposed to the noise could suffer from acoustic trauma and noise-induced hearing loss.
