TIRUCHI: The District Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association has urged the Union Government to revise the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy. In a statement issue here on Tuesday, the President of the association G. Kanagasabai said that the Government has recently raised the MSP for fine quality paddy from Rs.610 to Rs.650 per quintal. This has come as a huge disappointment for farmers, who have been demanding Rs.850 per quintal for ordinary variety and Rs.900 per quintal for fine variety, in view of the steep rise in input costs and labour wages. Apart from this, the farmers associations were also demanding Rs.100 per quintal from the State Government towards incidental expenses. Farmers were suffering heavy losses as the ADT 36 variety paddy fetched only Rs.310 per bag in the open market against the Government fixed price of Rs.390. The Centre and State Governments should take into account the hardship faced by ryots and ensure remunerative prices for their produce, he said.
