Alluring craft works on show

After the hectic shopping for Onam festival, it is time to have a look at the craft works from various parts of the country. The Gandhi Shilp Bazaar, an exhibition of handicrafts, at the Ernakulathappan grounds provides a glimpse of the world of crafts. Hosted by Surabhi, the Kerala State Handicrafts apex cooperative society, the show has attractions for the buyers as well as the casual visitors.

For the discerning customer, the variety of sarees and dress material on offer is truly alluring. The buyers get an opportunity to have a look at the intrinsic patterns woven in different styles and select the appropriate ones suited to them.

The Benaras sarees, Bathik printed sarees from Mysore, Bagh prints from Madhya Pradesh, Phulkari from Punjab and Kota sarees of Rajasthan have distinct characteristics. The trendy as well as conventional designs are on display. Bed sheets with block prints and cushion covers with mirror embroidery are also available.

Handbags of different shapes and shades offer another attraction. Madhubani paintings that make use of natural colours, Kalahasti wood works, lampshades made of natural fibre from Tamil Nadu, wall hangings from Rajasthan, Muradabad metal works, dry flowers from Nagaland, leather bags from Shantiniketan, toys from Karnataka, glassware from Agra, metallic curios from Chattisgarh, camel leather chappals from Haryana and pottery from Tirupathi are among other fascinating items on show.
