KOZHIKODE: Rustic, bejewelled women in varied moods - in perfect sync with nature, showcasing their beauty, besides the identity of the country. This is the leitmotif of the 29-odd watercolours on handmade paper by the Hyderabad-based artist S.K. Sirajuddin exhibited at the Shrishti Art Gallery, Kozhikode, till September 28. His collections is called `Women with nature.'

Watercolours are the forte of this artist who was a lecturer in painting at the S.V. College of Fine Arts for more than 11 years.

The artist seeks to convey the role of rural women in nurturing and conserving nature, and as wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends.

The cultural identity of India is in its villages, and women have a significant role there. They signify power and compassion, strength and gentleness, Sirajuddin says.

At first glance, the watercolours look almost similar by way of the women's attire and their jewellery. On closer view, the subtleties of the artist's palette in creating a definite impact through each of the frames become evident.

"Each painting has a different meaning, and is a new step forward for me," he says.

Sirajuddin maintains he has no affinity for any one colour. "I like all colours, and use them equally. Black too, which many do not use, can be used to advantage."

He remembers his first painting - of a peacock resplendent in all colours - a work much appreciated by his teacher and classmates.

But in almost all his frames on view, except one where his brush makes only a sweep, different hues of green are dominant, giving nature's own colour the prime place.

Sirajuddin is mainly attracted to watercolours. Each of his works is an expression of the fluid and ephemeral medium.

He has done his Bachelor of Fine Arts from JNT University, Hyderabad. A professional artist, he has participated in a number of group and solo shows in Kolkata, New Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

He has won many awards, including the ICCR State award and the AIFACS New Delhi award.

He has participated in the portrait painting camp organised by the South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur, and the Young Artists' camp organised by the S.V. College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad.
