Private participation in development of projects inevitable: Minister

Special Correspondent

"Job opportunities will expand through SEZ"

  • Seminar conducted on vocational and career guidance
  • Over 74,000 youths likely to get employment: survey

Pondicherry: Health and Labour Minister E. Valsaraj said private participation in the development of infrastructure was inevitable and the administration had evolved innovative plans to generate employment. Inaugurating a two-day seminar on "Vocational and Career Guidance" organised by the Department of Labour to bring to focus among students (now doing Standard XII) the various professional and other courses available here on Wednesday, he said the department had been holding the seminars periodically. So far 36 such programmes had been conducted in Pondicherry and its outlying regions covering a total of 23,000 students from various schools. 197 schools had responded to the programme.

Mr. Valsaraj said the plan for development of port and also the proposal to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) here would generate job opportunities to around 74,000 youths as per a survey conducted by an organisation here. He called upon the youth to develop self-confidence and have clear goals about their future career.

Mr. Valsaraj handed an order of appointment over to Ms. Sandhiya Rani, the wife of the Deputy Labour Commissioner of Pondicherry, D. Venkanna, who was killed in a road accident in April last. Director of Education G. Ragesh Chandra said a Joint Director would soon be put in charge of counselling the students on various courses under career guidance scheme.

He said the seminar would enable the participants to get details from resource persons. Deputy Director of Employment P. Karunakaran proposed a vote of thanks.
