Shikha Uberoi crashes out

Bali (Indonesia): India's Shikha Uberoi crashed out of the Wismilak International women's tennis tournament losing to qualifier Andreja Klepac of Slovenia in the first round.

The United States-based Indian Shikha, started well, winning the first set 7-6(5), but could not maintain her momentum and lost the next two sets.

The 194th-ranked Shikha lost 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3 to the Slovenian, who next faces Olga Poutchkova of Russia, who upset fourth-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

At Beijing, Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis recorded wins at the China Open on Wednesday, while top seed Ivan Ljubicic took in the splendour of the Great Wall.

Second-seeded Davydenko's victory came just 36 hours after he arrived in Beijing from his US Open semifinal loss to Roger Federer. The Russian, who has played almost every week this season, shrugged off the effects of the journey as he defeated Dane Kenneth Carlsen 6-3, 6-4.

Hrbaty in last eight

Slovak fifth seed Dominik Hrbaty gained the first of the quarterfinal slots as he ousted Austrian Alejandro Peya 6-1, 2-6, 6-0.

Thai Danai Udomchoke advanced when seventh seed Ivo Karlovic retired trailing 6-2, 3-1.

At the ATP BCR Open in Bucharest, local star Andrei Pavel made a successful start defeating Boris Pashanski of Serbia 6-3, 6-1 in the first round on Tuesday.
