Undertrial commits suicide

Coimbatore: An undertrial in a triple murder case committed suicide inside the Central Prison on Tuesday night.

According to police, Bose was accused of murdering his three children. The Tirupur police found the children lying dead inside their locked house in the first week of this month. Bose, who fled from the scene of crime, surrendered before the police.

Investigations revealed that in a fit of rage he had beaten his son to death, poisoned his first daughter and killed the second daughter by hanging. He was remanded to judicial custody.

On Tuesday night, the prison security staff noticed Bose hanging himself inside the cell. He was rushed to a hospital but died en route. Investigations are on. — Staff Reporter

Singapore Minister to visit Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Balaji Sadasivam, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Government of Singapore, will visit Coimbatore on October 2.

Ajit Singh, Consul General of the Republic of Singapore, based in Chennai, who was here on Wednesday to make a preliminary study of this city, told The Hindu that the Minister would like to have a firsthand knowledge of the infrastructure available here for promoting various enterprises.

Mr. Singh, accompanied by Ramakrishna Kukkila, Chennai Centre Director, International Enterprise Singapore, called on the District Collector, Neeraj Mittal, and also had discussions with Jayakumar Ramdass, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, local chapter.

The Consul General was apprised of the salubrious climate of this region, availability of excellent technical manpower due to a number of reputed academic institutions, highly enterprising population and also the booming industry and real estate sector. — Special Correspondent

TNCC appoints observers for districts

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has appointed observers for all revenue districts in the State to study the party's prospects in the coming local body elections.

In a statement here on Wednesday, TNCC president M. Krishnasswamy said the observers would visit the districts assigned to them and convene a meeting of MLAs and MPs, local party leaders and workers and party volunteers. After collecting information from the districts, the observers would submit a report to the TNCC for follow-up action.

The statement said as the local body elections were to be held on the basis of revenue district limit, the party appointed two observers for each revenue district. As Chennai was divided into three revenue districts, six observers had been appointed for Chennai, the statement added. — Special Correspondent

IAS officers protest Jayalalithaa's remarks

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu IAS Officers' Association has expressed its protest against the statement of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa against IAS Officer S.M. Hoda.

In a statement here on Wednesday, association president C.K. Gariyali said the association was pained to note that the former Chief Minister had made a highly "objectionable statement against Mr. Hoda, a senior and upright officer."

The IAS officers in the State were reckoned to be the most dedicated and efficient in India. They had played a major role in elevating the State from being the fifth poorest in the country to be one of the most progressive States. The statement also appealed to all political parties to refrain from making allegations against IAS officers in future. — Special Correspondent

Youth killed

Tiruchi: A 23-year-old man was fatally knocked down by a speeding vehicle on the on the Madurai — Tiruchi National Highway at Soriampatti — Malugapatti branch road in the district on Tuesday night. According to police sources, Illayaraja, of Malugapatti, was riding a two-wheeler when a speeding vehicle knocked him down killing him on the spot.

BIS branch sought in every district

Tiruchi: The Thennindia Nugarvor Padhukappu Kulumam has appealed for the setting up of branch office of the Bureau of Indian Standards in every district headquarters to propagate the organisation's activities and its objectives.In a press release issued here, it urged the authorities concerned to identify vehicles operating without permit in the city.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.03 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 9,123 cusecs and the outflow, 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Woman murdered, jewels missing

TIRUNELVELI: A woman was found murdered in her house on Wednesday.

Since valuables in the house were missing after the incident, police suspect that it could be a murder for gain.

The culprits, who entered the house of P. Rajalakshmi (48) of Solaicherry, coming under Ooththumalai police station, after removing the tiles on the roof, murdered her and escaped with 145 grams of gold ornaments.

The body was sent to Sankarankovil Government hospital for post-mortem. Ooththumalai police have filed a case and are investigating.

Child labourers rescued

Tuticorin: Four child labourers were rescued by a team of officials from the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) at Kovilpatti on Tuesday.

M. Nallaperumal, project director, NCLP, said while Bose (13) was rescued from a hardware shop, Manoharan (13), Prashant (11) and Mariselvam (13) were traced in shops selling vegetables and fruit juices.

All the rescued children would be rehabilitated to the mainstream education, he added.

Mother, son commit suicide

Nagercoil: Two persons, including a woman, committed suicide on Wednesday by jumping before a running train at Swamithoppu.

Based on information given by the public, the Railway Protection Force personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.

The victims, who were identified as Amudha (34), wife of Murughan of Myladi and her son Vinodh (15) of Swamithoppu, took the extreme step owing to a domestic quarrel.

Police have registered a case and are further investigating. — Staff Reporter

Campus interview

ERODE: Sasurie College of Engineering, Vijayamangalam, is hosting a campus recruitment drive for students of a number of engineering colleges in the region on Thursday.

A release from the college says students in final year engineering in Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, B. Tech in Information Technology, MCA or M.E. Computer Science are eligible to appear for the interview.

Apart from the above, those appearing for the interview should have secured a minimum of 70 per cent from Class X onwards.

According to a press release, speakers threw light on various works of Bharathiar. Members passed a resolution demanding that the government announce the birth anniversary of Bharathiar as National Poets Day.

NAMAKKAL: The State Lorry Owners' Federation - Tamil Nadu have decided to support the indefinite strike from September 15 midnight called by lorry owners associations in Kerala protesting Kerala Government's order to install speed governors in heavy vehicles.

The federation has asked its members not to send their lorries to Kerala from September 15 midnight.

NAMAKKAL: A 30-year-old-man was killed on the spot when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus hit his motorcycle on Namakkal-Tiruchi Main Road on Tuesday.

RASIPURAM: Two women were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hillock near Athanur Amman Temple here on Tuesday night.
