Corrections and clarifications

  • The sentence in "India, Brazil to elevate relations to strategic partnership" (September 13, 2006) was: "Describing his visit to Brazil, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 38 years, as a `voyage of discovery,' the Prime Minister [Manmohan Singh] ... ." A reader said Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao had been there in 1992. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Brazil at the bilateral level was

Indira Gandhi in 1968. Although P.V. Narasimha Rao, accompanied by Minister of State for External Affairs Eduardo Faleiro and Minister of State for Environment and Forests Kamal Nath, went there in 1992, it was only to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

  • "Rajiv Sikri, who will be the seniormost member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) when Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran retires later this month, has sought early retirement in protest against his supersession for the top job," was the sentence in "Senior MEA official seeks retirement" (September 12, 2006). A reader asks whether this is correct and mentions others who are senior. Our Special Correspondent clarifies that Mr. Sikri will be the seniormost IFS officer in Delhi. This qualification was inadvertently omitted.

  • Referring to "Sharapova sizzles to stun Mauresmo", a New York Times story on the U.S. Open ("Sport", September 10, 2006), a reader points out that writer Liz Robbins names six women [Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Margaret Court] as being the only ones to have reached the final of all four Grand Slams in a year. "She has forgotten Maureen Connolly who won the Grand Slam in 1953, being the first woman to do so. If she was thinking only of the Open era, she should have said so." The Sports Desk clarifies that the reader is right. Maureen Connolly won the Grand Slam in 1953, which was during the pre-Open era. Those who Liz Robbins has mentioned are players who reached the finals of the Open era, which started in 1968.

  • In the report "The vision for excellence" (EducationPlus, Tamil Nadu editions, September 11, 2006), the caption of the accompanying photograph was: "150 years old: The Senate House of the University of Madras, Chennai, after renovation." Many readers point out that the picture shows the University Centenary Building.
