Onam celebrations at Dilli Haat

NEW DELHI: The Global Confederation of Pravasi Malayalees (GCPM), an organisation of Malayalees spread across the world, is organising its sixth Onam Celebration at Dilli Haat here this Saturday.

According to a CHPM release, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will inaugurate the event that will include "Thalappoli'', "Thiruvathira'', "Mohiniyattam'', "Kaikotti kali'', "Pancha vadyam'' and a procession of elephants. Another highlight will be a comedy show presented by Showguns.

MTNL Perfect Health Mela

NEW DELHI: The forthcoming MTNL Perfect Health Mela will create general awareness about the harmful effects of abdominal obesity, according to Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal.

In a statement, Dr. Aggarwal said adults who carry most of their excess weight around the middle are at particular risk of high blood pressure. Quoting a 10-year study of Chinese adults published in the American Journal of Hypertension, he said those whose waistlines expanded over the years showed a matching increase in blood pressure.

Indo-Russian friendship hailed

NEW DELHI: Speakers at a seminar on "Historical Landmarks of Indo-Russian Friendship and Cooperation", dedicated to the 35th Anniversary of the Indo-Russian (Soviet) Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, re-affirmed the relevance and significance of the bilateral treaty in the present day world.

The seminar was organised jointly by Russian Centre of Science and Culture and India-Russia Friendship Society here on Tuesday. The chief guest at the seminar, All-India Congress Committee secretary Major Ved Prakash, highlighted the support and assistance provided by Russia to India, particularly during the time of crisis.

Charges framed

NEW DELHI: A city court on Wednesday framed charges against six members of a family for driving the daughter-in-law to suicide on her sixth marriage anniversary for bringing insufficient dowry.

Additional Sessions Judge O P Gupta charged Sanjay Kumar, his mother Meera, elder brother Rakesh and his wife Seema and two younger brothers Bhuvnesh and Dinesh for subjecting Poonam Gupta, Sanjay's wife, to cruelty under Sections 498 A (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) of the IPC.

The court also charged them with allegedly forcing Poonam to commit suicide on April 27 this year.

A case against all the six were registered with Mangolpuri police station based on the statement of Laxmi Kant Gupta brother of the deceased, a day after the later's death.
