COIMBATORE: Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor of Avinashilingam University, was bestowed the `Honorary Colonel' rank by the Deputy Director General of National Cadet Corps, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman and Nicobar, CMDE U.N. Chitnavis, here on Tuesday.
Development
He said the rank was given only to select vice-chancellors who contributed to the development of youth. "The honour is a recognition for all the hard work we have put in," Ms. Saroja said. Youth was the power of the nation. The socio-economic development of the nation and the strength of the country depended on the country's young people, she added. Incidentally, the university is celebrating its golden jubilee with a series of activities lined up for the year. The aim of education is development of human resources. Colleges and universities should meet the demands of education especially, strengthening the system of value education. The NCC, which was part of the curriculum in the university, always aimed at grooming future leaders, she said.
Nationalism
Chancellor K. Kulandeivel urged the students to preserve the spirit of nationalism. "A sense of patriotism has to be instilled in the young minds," he said.
