SOLUTION IN SIGHT? The new traffic plan is expected to be an answer to the congestion problems such as this one at Taramani-Velachery junction.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has asked Anna University to do a study to help evolve a traffic and transportation plan for the Adyar, Taramani, Guindy and Velachery areas.

Union Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran had convened a meeting last month to discuss ways of decongesting the areas.

CMDA member-secretary Mohamed Nasimuddin told The Hindu the university had been asked to carry out a study with specific terms of reference. The university should complete the study in about two months.

Enquiries with officers involved show that the study will cover Anna Salai - Guindy, Sardar Patel Road, Velachery Road, Lattice Bridge Road and Taramani Road - Old Mahabalipuram Road and the Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram radial road. The number of vehicles using the stretches has grown phenomenally in the past five years following the increase in the number of IT and IT Enabled services companies.

Reversal of trend

In the 1970s and 80s, residents from the suburbs came to the city for work or study. But now lakhs of students and office-goers went to the suburbs, causing congestion at Guindy, Adyar, Tiruvanmiyur, Velachery and OMR. The study will also focus on problems of parking space, road infrastructure, and road safety standards.
