"Seized weapons made in Chennai"

Nothing to do with LTTE: Swaranjit Sen

CHENNAI: Rocket shells and launchers seized by the Andhra Pradesh police in Mahabubnagar and Prakasam districts on September 8 were produced in Chennai, Andhra Pradesh Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen said on Wednesday.

Answering presspersons Mr. Sen, who met his Tamil Nadu counterpart, D. Mukherjee, said the weapons were produced "right in Chennai... at Ambattur."

However, Mr. Mukherjee told The Hindu that while the consignments had been sent from Ambattur, it was a matter of investigation whether they were manufactured at Ambattur. Soon after the seizure of the weaponry in the neighbouring State, there was reliable information that they had been transported from a godown at Ambattur on the Chennai's outskirts. Investigations revealed three consignments were sent to Andhra Pradesh in August last and May this year.

The Andhra Pradesh police chief had a meeting with Mr. Mukherjee for nearly 30 minutes this morning before he left for Hyderabad. Mr. Sen said that the Andhra Pradesh police teams were in the city and were working jointly with the Tamil Nadu police on the case. The progress was "very satisfactory." There were clues, but the details could not be divulged, he said.

Referring to the identification of a person, who possibly sent the consignments, as Srinivas Reddy, Mr. Sen said the police had a portrait of the person. But he was not sure whether the name of the person was correct.

"Don't make it so dramatic and romantic," Mr. Sen said answering a question on the seizure and its possible links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. This had nothing to do with the LTTE, he said.
