TRULY INTERNATIONAL: G. Madhavi with her students and colleagues in Nigeria, where she had done 150 bilateral cataract operations and designed a teaching CD.
Rajahmundry: A woman ophthalmologist from Rajahmundry, has brought laurels not only to her motherland but also to the medical fraternity by designing a compact disc, which highlights each and every step of `Small Incision of Cataract Surgery (SICS). She presented this audio-visual CD in many national and international conferences and paved the way for budding ophthalmologists and surgeons who want to update their knowledge. She is Doctor Ghanta Madhavi of Goutami Eye Institute in Rajahmundry who had done the SICS very easier than existing teaching methods. As a medical student of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, and a product of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, she performed about 36,000 cataract surgeries, out of which 1,800 are pediatric from 1998.
Modified technique
The modified technique of her teaching audio-visual CD contains expression of Cataractious lens with endothelium friendly visco-elastic substance and it is in circulation in the USA, China, Canada and European countries.
The state-of-the-art technique helps in managing uncontrolled glaucoma known as Ahmed Valve implantation. She learned it from Dr. Karim Damji of Canada. Her interest in pediatric surgeries was inspired by her mentor Dr. V.K. Raju of USA (Founder of Gautami Institute). Later on she learned more techniques under the tutelage of Eugene Helveston, considered father of modern pediatric ophthalmology.
If any fresh resident or practising surgeon accesses this CD and goes through it again and again, he or she will learn how to overcome difficulties of surgery. She said she would supply CDs to any ophthalmologist or surgeon free of cost, if they mail to her (madhavi.ghanta@gmail.com). She said this technique was useful for developing as well as underdeveloped nations. Her team of doctors consist of Linda Lawrence of USA, Manolo (Peru) and Jeff (USA) in ORBIS.
