Chandy warns of agitation

Alleges that LDF regime has made a mess of higher education

Kozhikode: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has criticised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government for making a mess of the higher education sector in the State.

The Kerala Government has so far been not able to conduct admissions to professional colleges though classes had started for new batches in neighbouring States a month ago, Mr. Chandy told a news conference here on Wednesday.

He said the Government was still harping on the concept of finding a permanent solution to the self-financing professional colleges issue rather than taking steps to solve the problem at least for this year.

A month had passed since the Supreme Court had pronounced its verdict on the self-financing Act.

But the Government was trying to create more problems. The fate of thousands of students was hanging in the balance.

The former Chief Minister said the United Democratic Front (UDF) would be forced to take the issue to the streets if the situation continued. It was maintaining silence considering the fate of the students. He said the UDF had warned the Government against bringing in a new legislation to control self-financing professional colleges this year at the commencement of the academic year. Even the amendments the UDF had moved to the self-financing Bill were put to vote and rejected in the Assembly.

Regarding the Smart City project in Kochi, Mr. Chandy said he would comment on it only after the Government worked out the proposals. However, wide differences existed between the new project and the one chalked out during the term of the UDF Government, he said.

"The UDF Government's proposal was for a joint venture with Dubai Internet City, sponsored by the Dubai Government. The State Government had a stake in the project. Now there was no such participation by the Government in the project," Mr. Chandy said.
