KANNUR: The Kerala Karshaka Union (KKU) has urged the Centre to include Idukki, Alappuzha and Kannur districts in the special agricultural package. Union president Jose Chemperi said in a release here on Wednesday that he submitted a memorandum to the Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar to draw his attention that the three districts were seriously affected by the agricultural crisis. The memorandum urged the Minister to take steps to write off the debts of small farmers having land up to one hectare, he said. Mr. Chemperi sought Mr. Pawar's intervention to ensure that pepper, paddy, coconut, arecanut, cardamom, coffee, cashew and vanilla be included in the list of items that the Central Government was planning to submit to be included in the Sensitive List of the World Trade Organisation.
Other demands
A meeting of pepper producing countries be convened by the Centre and a consortium like the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries be constituted to stabilise the price of pepper, the memorandum demanded.
